Makara is the dive-watch label of Nadim Elgarhy, a Montreal-based designer with a background in engineering and marketing who also runs the Helgray and Rossling & Co. brands. He launched it on the WatchUSeek forum in June 2013 with the Octopus, a 44 mm diver in bronze or steel whose first limited run sold out before it had been made. Elgarhy told Worn & Wound in 2015 that Makara is for bold divers and tool watches, mostly in bronze, made in very limited runs with automatic movements and settled with the forum community before production. On both the Octopus and the Sea Turtle the maker specifies a CuSn8 bronze case with an engraved 316L steel caseback, so steel rather than bronze sits against the skin. Worn & Wound's review of the Sea Turtle admired its faceted, roughly octagonal case and double-domed sapphire, but found the lume weak and the flat 44 mm case slab-like on the wrist.
