Bruno Belamich and Carlos-A. Rosillo, two friends, started Bell & Ross in the early 1990s (the maker dates its story to 1994, Monochrome's history to 1992), and for roughly its first decade the watches were produced with the German maker Sinn. Chanel Horlogerie bought a stake in 1998, Monochrome reports, and the company is run from Paris while the watches are assembled and adjusted in Switzerland, at La Chaux-de-Fonds. The square case around a round dial, borrowed from cockpit instruments and introduced on the BR 01 in 2005, still frames nearly every collection, and the maker puts black ceramic at the centre of its range. Titanium appears in the newer manufacture lines, the BR-X3 and BR-X5, which Bell & Ross specifies in microblasted Grade 2 around its COSC-certified BR-CAL.323; Monochrome notes that the calibre is built by Kenissi, the movement maker that also supplies Tudor. The bronze BR 03 divers use CuSn8, an alloy the maker gives as 92 percent copper and 8 percent tin.
