Joseph Bulova opened a small jewelry shop on Maiden Lane in New York City in 1875, and the company that grew from it still leads with its record of firsts, among them the first radio advertisement, in 1926, and the Accutron of 1960, a tuning-fork watch the maker describes as the first fully electronic watch, which later found its way into NASA instruments. Citizen Watch Co. bought Bulova from Loews, which had owned it for almost thirty years, in a deal JCK reported would close in January 2008. The MIL-SHIPS line revives a dive watch Bulova submitted to the US Navy after a 1955 call for a combat diver's watch, which the Navy Experimental Diving Unit evaluated in 1957 and 1958 but never issued. A limited Navy EOD edition puts the design in Grade 5 titanium with a Swiss Sellita SW200, and a special edition for the brand's 150th anniversary is cased in sandblasted CuSn8 bronze.
