IWC watches in titanium, ceramic, bronze and carbon

IWC dates from 1868, when Florentine Ariosto Jones, a 27-year-old watchmaker and engineer from Boston, founded the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen, and its headquarters still occupy his first factory building; the company is a Richemont maison. It calls itself a pioneer of both titanium and ceramic. It began working titanium in the 1980s, and in 1986 its Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, ref. 3755, became the first wristwatch with a case in black zirconium oxide ceramic. Coloured ceramic comes from mixing zirconium oxide with other metallic oxides, and in 2022 that work produced the Colors of TOP GUN pilot's watches, in shades such as Woodland green and Lake Tahoe white developed with Pantone. Ceratanium is IWC's own material, a titanium alloy fired at high temperature in a kiln, which keeps titanium's lightness while taking on a dark finish and a hardness close to ceramic. For plain titanium the brand does publish a grade: the Ingenieur Automatic 40 has a Grade 5 titanium case and bracelet.
