Panerai dates its history to 1860, when Giovanni Panerai opened a watchmaker's shop on the Ponte alle Grazie in Florence. From the 1910s it supplied precision instruments to the Italian Navy, it opened to civilian buyers only in 1993, and it is now a Richemont maison making its watches at its own manufacture in Neuchâtel. The first Bronzo, the 47 mm PAM382 of 2011, used a copper-tin alloy of the kind fitted to ship propellers, and SJX describes Carbotech as a carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer built from layered sheets that give it a wood-grain look. In 2020 a Luminor Marina arrived in DMLS titanium, which aBlogtoWatch explains as titanium powder sintered by laser in layers 0.03 mm thick. Ti-Ceramitech came in 2024 from the brand's Laboratorio di Idee: a titanium alloy whose surface is converted into a dense ceramic layer by electrolytic plasma oxidation. Black ceramic reached the 40 mm Luminor in 2025 with the PAM01460, which closes with a Grade 5 titanium caseback.
